I was worried when this email arrived - it had all the signs of a phishing email - it had my name wrong, it gave me the promise of something i want, a link to get it, and the hyperlink which points to some url other than where it should:

S,

Thank you for ordering the Pay Per View Internet stream coverage of BlizzCon? 2009!
As a thank-you from Blizzard Entertainment, below is a World of Warcraft? code for a ?Grunty the Murloc Marine? pet.
To receive the pet, visit http://www.blizzcon.com/pet, and follow the instructions.
Your in-game pet code is:

(the code was here)

And don?t forget, you must have a Battle.net? account to receive your pet.
Lock and load!
Blizzard Entertainment
and the hyperlink to blizzcon.com/pet was in fact a link to http://mailman.netcraft.co.il/t/r/somethingorotherhere (removed just in case it means something unique to me)

I was about to delete it when i figured i might as well try the code out at blizzcon.com/pet and was surprised when it worked. With blizzard's phishing problems, i'm surprised they would do something like this

It is really weird, especially since... I mean, you paid for that. Why does there need to be a tracking link involved; isn't that what the code is for?

I'm sure many are worried about that email because of that. Hopefully this news will deter people from writing it off as a phishing scam -- it'd suck if someone lost their code because they delete it thinking that.

They are linked to your battle.net account. So when you create a completely new character, you get them in your mail right away, just like the warbot and and collector edition pets. I tested it with a new character after activating the code and i had grunty and the battle-bot, looks like every toon you roll now gets them, which is awesome in my mind.

I suppose in that case we can forgive them for not making the item account-bound :P

Pretty much, this at least ensures that all of your character will get it and you don't have to remember which bank alt you hid it on.

And you don't have to waste a mule slot to store it :-)

Which achievement addon do you use to also display the progress of other characters? I currently use OverAchiever, which just displays my current character's progress on foreign achievement tooltips.

If I might say as someone who did attend blizzcon and had their grunty long ago. If you are worried about the link in your e-mail and do not wish to use it the address on the back of grunty's code card is indeed http://www.blizzcon.com/pet

If you do feel you link is to a compromising site just type it in manually to your address bar to be damn sure you go to the right page.

I know I'm not a blizz rep or anything but I hope my word on it quells some people's fears.

Well I wanted to wait for another occurrence of screenshots where this addon is used, but, let's bump, what is the name of that addon?
